Mandaçaia is an indigenous word that means “beautiful lookout” (mandá:watchman/çai:beautiful), a fact that is observed in the entrance hole of the hive a bee is always present, that is, the lookout. Melipona mandacaia is a Brazilian social bee, with black head and thorax, abdomen (with broken yellow stripes in the middle of each segment) and ferruginous wings. It is also known by the names of Amanaçaí, Amanaçaia, Manaçaia and Mandaçaia-Grande. Measuring between 10 and 11 mm in length, these bees nest in hollow trees. Their nests, with mouths of clay, are large and, in general, contain many liters of honey.
